What is the difference between mental skills development and sport psychology consulting?
They are really not that different…
- Sport psychology consulting is in response to people who know they are facing a mental block or challenge detracting from their performance. First, we meet, discuss and listen in order to discover the issue. Then, we work to change the behavior and get the athlete back on track. Although this is considered sport psychology consulting, we might also be teaching a mental skill during this process.
- Mental skills development takes a proactive approach. Through mental skills development programs, we teach athletes important mental skills that will help them to be successful in their sport. It is a process. These skills, like any other skill, may take time to master. Our primary goal is to provide these skills before you get to the competitive arena so that you can understand the skills, apply them, and over time master them.
What is an example of a mental skill?
A mental skill is any thought or thinking process applicable to your sport or competitive domain. Examples include:
- A soccer player’s ability to maintain focus near the end of a very tense match
- A swimmer’s ability to block out unnecessary stimuli prior to a meet
- A student’s ability to stay calm before a big test
- A football team’s decision to stay motivated in the middle of along, injury riddled season
- A coach’s ability to continue to focus on improving her team even though she might be fired if she does not win!
- A volleyball team’s ability to stay “tight” as a team in the middle of a team scandal
Each one of these skills, when identified, practiced and mastered, can make or break a performance. DevelopMental Solutions can help you master your mental skills.
