Mental skills development for teams provides an opportunity for teams to develop mental skills in order to improve performance. Mental skills pertinent to a specific sport or competitive arena are determined by utilizing past experiences, research findings and discussions with the coach or staff in charge of developing the team.

Examples of session topics include:

  • Goal setting
  • Being competitive as a group
  • Dealing with adversity within a team
  • How to handle being favored going into a competition

Sessions are designed and implemented based on the peaking calendar for each particular sport. Periodization is common practice for many sports in order that athletes may peak and valley at appropriate times. At DevelopMental Solutions, we discuss with coaches the best time to implement each topic in order to maximize athletes’ problem solving abilities.

Here is how it works:

  1. You, the coach, determine that you want your team to learn mental skills over a period of time in order to improve performance.
  2. We meet to review mental skills your group will need in order to be successful.
  3. We go through a series of steps to ensure you are learning and are able to apply the skills.
  4. We meet over time to ensure that you are applying and realizing success with the skills.
  5. The process can last a month, a season, a year or number of years, depending on how you want to set it up.
